Process: The final model is made out of several plastic drop sheets that I had already at home, the plastic is very fragile and thin similar to freezer bags. Because I wanted to make a crate large scale I thought this would be ideal as it easily folds down to nothing and is light weight. To get the size I was after I folded the plastic sheet into a triangle and cut out the first square. Once I had the one square id lay it over the top of the other sheets and use it as a stencil to then get 5 square sheets. I laid 4 on top of each other and cut out smaller square windows similar to a crate. I used clear tape to secure the squares together and taped clear string to hold the crate up to make sure it all holds together. Because the plastic is so thin and the crate is very large it took sometime to display it using a ladder and taping it to the ceiling. The final image is to be taken outside as it will look more like its levitating. Setting up outsideSetting up outside was difficult because of the weather and wind. Luckily I have some tree's in the backyard I was able to tie the string to. I used weights on the ground first to base the crate then one by one tied the corners to tree branches. I have a photo next to the crate so that you get a better idea of the scale. Surprisingly the plastic didn't tear and I was able to pack it away without any damage. Final Images

This consist of three sketch models to help with the development of my final model. I like the idea of doing a large scale model of a mundane object I have around the house so I have chosen to create a large scale model of a milk crate. To work out the materials I will use for the final project I will use these sketch models as a test. The standard milk crate is about 31 cm height, 34 cm width and length. Sketch ModelsBalsa Wood: 10 cm height, 12 cm length
This sketch model allows for detail of all the trimmings on the crate, although I was unable to cut the holes through this wood as the grain was to fragile. I like the look of this crate and would love to make the final out of wood so that I can do all the detail but it will come down to cost. Also the weight of the final project could be an issue if made out of wood. Wire: 7 cm height, 7 cm length This is plumbing wire probably very similar to sculpture wire, very flexible and easy to cut. What I like most about this sketch model is the shadow of the crate, this idea would look really interesting large scale even though there is less detail the shape of the crate is still formed. String crate: 32 cm height, 26 cm length This sketch was built inside a shoe box, I pocked holes through the box where the string goes through and just taped the string down the outside. The shadows are also whats interesting with this model, I like the idea of the crate floating, it is hard to make out the detail of the crate form by building it out of string but makes for an interesting illusion. For this part of the project I decided to re create a book stand 5 times the size by using copper pipe. As the model was made by memory I measured the thickness of the copper pipe with something that was similar thickness to the book stand. The copper pipe is about 5 times the thickness from memory so I tried to imagine the book stand as a whole, 5 times bigger.
I made a small model of the stand with craft wire to work out where the bends were and to figure out what to bend first. The benders used for the pipe have measurements on the side so I could replicate the same angles on each bend. Some measurements had to be done by eye such as the angles outwards to make the V shape. Copper pipe is very strong and was hard to bend even with the correct tools, the stand itself is very durable and could easily hold an oversized book. For this assignment I am required to make a model from memory. The space I chose is the shop front of Polyester Books which use to be in Fitzroy. I used to work there about 7 years ago and it was one of the best jobs I ever had. I had the chance to meet a lot of people and be apart of the Brunswick street culture. The iconic book shop was home to artist, poets and musicians and has a close place to my heart. The books sold at the shop were not your everyday books and I was learning something new everyday. Now I have noticed shops on Brunswick street are mostly chain store's and restaurants as the rent started to get higher and higher this drove out the small boutique business' that made the street exciting to go to. I feel that I can memorise the shop front well as I would have to open the shop and pull down the sun blind at the front of the store. Even before working in the store I used to hang out inside as a customer. The model was really enjoyable to make but also challenging. Working without measurements and measuring things by eye was difficult. The balsa wood was easy to cut and work with until I tried to use small screws to hold the blind in, the wood chipped slightly so I then decided to just glue the blind directly onto the wood. The Plasticine would get a few knocks in the process that I would then have to go back and smooth over. Finished ModelComparisonThese models are a series of free standing forms representing my body in different scales.
I decided to keep my models minimal and use different textures for the clothing to give them some depth. I then took photo's of the models next to items I have in my house to show scale.
